Relief
for heart patients soon at Sri J'pura Hospital
by Shanika Sriyananda Liyanage The number of patients in the waiting list for open heart surgery at the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, Kotte, will be considerably reduced with the completion of the new Cardiac Centre equipped with modern theatre facilities. The new cardiac centre, with the state-of- the art machinery, is scheduled to be completed before end of June. Dr. Lakshman Lanerolle, director of the hospital, told the 'Sunday Observer' that with one theatre, the hospital was able to perform 560 heart operations last year and 543 the previous year. "The number in the waiting list had to wait for their turn until the middle of the year 2003, but with the opening of the centre, it would be reduced to a great extent", he said. According to Dr. Lanerolle, the main shortcoming at the cardio-thoracic unit of the hospital was the lack of nursing cadre in the operation theatre and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). "As a result, only one or two operations were performed daily at the hospital", Dr. Lanerolle said. Two physiotherapists from the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) were temporarily posted to the Cardio Unit for heart operations, following a directive of the Deputy Health Minister Sajith Premadasa. Despite the shortage of physiotherapists, over 307 heart operations on children, with 15 in November and six in December, were performed during the last year at the hospital. "Over 50 per cent in the waiting list comprises children for whom priority is given", he said. |
