Two narcotic smugglers nabbed

by ANTON NONIS

Whereas an Indian national keeps on purging a stock of heroin-filled condoms he had swallowed to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, another youth was nabbed with a parcel of heroin weighing over two kilograms from Kimbula Ela in Modera yesterday morning. The narcotic in his possession was estimated at Rs.2.5 million.

Investigations conducted so far by the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) had revealed that the youth, aged 21, an inhabitant of Modera had been a courier for a big-time narcotics dealer. The youth arrested on a tip-off is being held at the PNB under detention orders until the completion of inquiries.

Meanwhile, PNB sources said that the Indian national, aged 72, has excreted 87 condoms up to yesterday morning at the Negombo hospital.

According to hospital sources, the narcotics already purged out is about half a kilogram.

The suspect had revealed that he had engulfed about 104 heroin-filled condoms and the hospital staff had to keep him on a continuous dose of purgatives until every condom was passed out of his stomach.

The suspect who is from Kerala, had flown to Sri Lanka in an Indian Airlines flight last Thursday.

Investigations are being directed by the Deputy Inspector General (Crimes and Narcotics), Gerard Ignatius, assisted by Director Narcotics, SSP Pujith Jayasundera.
