Hameed remembered

The second commemoration of Dr. A. C. S. Hameed will be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall on Thursday January 31, 2002 at 4.00 p.m. It is organised by the A. C. S. Hameed Peace Foundation. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be the Chief Guest.

Ms. Margot Wallstrom presently European Union Commissioner for the Environment and former Minister in three Swedish governments will deliver the keynote address. Other distinguished speakers include Prof. G. L. Peiris, Minister for Enterprise Development and Constitutional Affairs, Mass Communication Minister, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, Ven. Kamburugamuwe Vajira Thera, former Vice Chancellor of the Pali University and Ananda Sangari, Senior Vice President of the TULF.

Top marks in Biology Stream

W. M. B. Tharaka Bandara of Royal College, Colombo has scored the highest marks and obtained the all island rank one in the Biology Stream at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination conducted last year.

He is the son of W. B. M. Saddharatne, Director of Education, Western Province and Mrs.K. R. M. Perera, a member of the staff of Royal College.

Unveiling of portraits

The unveiling of portraits of late Haj N.D.H. Abdul Gafoor, Messrs J.R.B. Kobbekaduwa Ramsay Wickremesinghe and Mrs. Marina de Mel at the Stanley House of school for the Deaf, Ratmalana will take place at 9.00 am today. The event is organised by the Past Pupils Association of the school for the Deaf.

TGHRA hail new Tourism Minister

The Tourist Guest Houses and Restaurants Association (TGHRA) Beruwela has lauded the appointment of Gamini Lokuge as the new Tourism Minister and pledged its full co-operation for all his endeavours to develop the local tourist industry.

In a congratulatory message to the new Minister the Association's President Nanda Lal de Silva states that Minister Lokuge's appointment once again to handle the subject of Tourism was a clear sign of the new government's commitment to develop this most vital industry which is a key foreign exchange earner of the country.

The Association has also congratulated Imitiaz Bakeer Markar, a son of Beruwala on his appointment as Minister of Mass Communication.

Pinkama

A commemorative Pinkama to mark the tenth death anniversary of late Ven. Devinuwara Ariyawansa Nayake Thera will be held today at Dhakshinaramaya, Mt. Lavinia. Ven. Thera was the Chief Adikarana Sangha Nayake and Chief Incumbent of Dakshinaramaya and the founder principal of Nalanda Pirivena, Mt. Lavinia.

The pinkama is organised under the patronage of Ven. Athuraliye Ananda Thera, Chief Incumbent of the viharaya. Ven. Kolonnawe Siri Sumangala Thera delivered a special dhammanusasana.

Asu Maha Shravaka Puja Pinkama will be conducted by the Ven. Wellawatte Pagnanasiri Thera today at 5.00 p.m.

A mass sil campaign will be held tomorrow, poya day.

Public talk

The Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science has organized a public talk on Towards Climate Predictions for Sri Lanka by Dr. Lareef Zubair (International Research Institute for Climate Prediction Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, New York, UDA). It will be held on Thursday January 31 at 5.00 pm at SLAAS Auditorium, 120/10, Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 07.

Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (Section D) and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka presents a Seminar & a Discussion by Prof. Mahinda Rupasinghe, Dr. Karunarathna Liyanage, Dr. Rohana Chandrajith on Gemstone and Evil Influnces on the January 29th 2002 from 1.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at the Main Hall of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Buttala. All are welcome.
