Kurash recognised as 58th sport

by Pelham Juriansz

The sport of Kurash was officially recognised as the 58th sport by the Sports Ministry and the logo launched at the Galadari Hotel last Monday amidst a distinguished gathering that included the Mayor of Colombo, Omar Kamil and the General Manager of the Hotel Chandra Mohotti.

The President of the Kurash Federation of Sri Lanka Rizvi Rawoof said that they are trying to promote the sport in the region and that is why they have organised the first-ever tournament in Sri Lanka at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Saturday, March 30, at which the Minister of Sports Johnston Fernando will be the chief guest.

This sport which began in Uzbekhistan is popular there and its popularity will be determined in the years to come when it is hoped that it will be promoted and introduced as an Olympic sport.

The five teams from abroad invited for the tournament on the 30th are Iran, Uzbekhistan, Singapore, India and Indonesia.
