Rs.
7m from Australia for mine action program
The Government of Australia has committed Rs. 7 million to support a mine action program in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. Funds have been provided to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to facilitate activities in selected areas. The Australian funding will support the recruitment of experts to provide technical advice for demining programs. It will also include activities to promote the mine awareness in areas affected by mines. The main objective of this program is to facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons to sites in Jaffna, Vanni, Vavuniya, Mannar and Trincomalee. Australia provides funding for resettlement and mine action programs
through the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). |
