Top awards for Emirates

Emirates has been named Airline of the Year by Skytrax Research (UK), one of the world's largest airline passenger surveys, for the second successive year.

The Dubai-based international carrier was voted the top airline ahead of Cathay Pacific Airways which came second, Singapore Airlines placed third and fourth ranking British Airways.

The independent survey carried out by Skytrax Research of the United Kingdom between August 2001 and March 2002 received more than four million nominations - an increase of nearly 50 per cent on the 2001 results.

The data was collected through online customer surveys, corporate travel buyer questionnaires, telephone interviews and selected onboard and airport interviews. Over 84 different nationalities of travellers submitted data.

In addition to the overall award, Emirates was named Best Airline - Middle East and Best Airline Long Haul Economy Class.

Meanwhile Emirates has been named 'Best Overseas-based Airline' in the incentives section of Britain's 2002 meetings and Incentive Travel Industry Awards held in London. This is first time the airline won the industry accolade in the face of fierce competition from previous winner Singapore Airlines. The awards were first launched in 1988 by Meetings and Incentive Travel Magazine.

Emirates has meanwhile given an opportunity for travellers in Sri Lanka to book flights online, through the airline's own website.

Colombo is the latest station on the Emirates network to receive the online booking facility, which also allows travellers to check seat availability on all Emirates flights and obtain fare quotations.

Online bookings have to be completed three working days prior to flight departure and tickets for online bookings will be delivered by Emirates to the passenger at no extra cost.

Delivery will initially exclude the northern and eastern provinces of the country. Membership to Skywards, the frequent flyer programs of Emirate and SriLankan Airlines which entitles frequent travellers to substantial benefits can also be obtained online.
