Sacrificing Murali It is perhaps true to mention that aficianados of cricket i.e. practically the whole of Sri Lanka, were aghast when they saw Murali (our own Tiger Woods), padded up to face a hostile bowling attack, as the 'two down' batsman in an important match before the finals of the Sharjah 2002 tournament. The danger he was exposed to of being seriously injured appeared to be of no concern to those in charge at that time. Whether Murali should field in the 'cover positions' because of his catching ability and fielding skills is also debatable. The only conclusion any cricket lover can reach is that this decision to send him as a pinch hitter was made by individual/s who are in a time warp. It is the nations prayer, however that our 'boys' will do the country proud by emerging triumphant from the tour to England. We can then fly our flag high. After all it's the players that matter and not the administrators. B. J. Karunatileka. |
