New courses by City & Guilds by Don Asoka Wijewardena In a bid to provide first-hand practical competence in engineering, hotel and catering, travel and tourism to Sri Lankan students, the City and Guilds Institution will introduce courses of studies in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tertiary Education. City and Guilds Regional Marketing and Business Development Manager Patrick Casey and the Country Representative in Sri Lanka Mufthy Hashim have already discussed with the Minister of Tertiary Education Kabir Hasheem on the necessity of practical qualifications to Sri Lankan students who are required by a number of companies with skills, said Patrick Casey in a brief interview with the Sunday Observer. Casey pointed out that the City & Guilds in Sri Lanka was established nearly 40 years ago and had been producing young, adults and even old people with professional as well as practical qualifications with the primary objective of catering to the needs of the industrial world. He said that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's e-Lanka concept would be a reality if the country was to develop with the application of modern science. He noted that the Sri Lankan government had realised the importance of skill needs of its industrial sector and was expecting foreign expertise to train Lankan students different trade skills needed by the competitive world. City & Guilds Country Representative Sri Lanka, Mufthy Hashim, said that in Sri Lanka around 1000 students had been following courses of studies on different trades and the students would be able to secure better employments either in Sri Lanka or overseas as the City & Guilds qualifications is well recognised all over the world. |
