IGP keen on cordial police-media relations Inspector General of Police (IGP), T. E. Anandarajah had issued a circular last Tuesday, directing all police officers to maintain cordial relationships with the media, at all times. Admitting that there had been a number of instances where police had been "rude" to media personnel, in the past, IGP Anandarajah reflecting on his new circular on "police-media relationships", told the Sunday Observer that it will eventually bring in closer relationships with media. "The circular was formulated with the concurrence of Internal Affairs Minister John Amaratunga and a decision on this was made, consequent to a dialogue held with representatives of the Free Media Movement, which was held at Internal Affairs Ministry," he said. IGP said that he personally believes that media could play an important supportive role that could be of great help to the Police Department. It has been emphasised in the circular that it is the duty of the police to provide necessary information to the media whenever they can and assist them in carrying out their duties. Anandarajah said, "It is very important that police media relationships should develop into a some sort of mutual understanding between the two parties." A meeting would be held during this month with all DIGs at the Colombo Police headquarters, to detail the aspects and importance of maintaining police-media relationships. -CW |
