Work on Police Welfare Centre begins by Farah Macan Markar Foundation stone for the Police Central Welfare Centre - a multi storied building was laid by Inspector General of Police T. E. Anandarajah, recently. This building project estimated to cost around Rs. 200 million, has been organised by the Sri Lanka Police Central Welfare Council (CWC) Benefit Scheme. It is the largest of its kind for welfare of the entire membership of the police force and their families. Located at Olcott Mawatha just next to the Technical College, a central, populated spot, the building will consist of three reception halls, a computer training centre for children of the police officers, a language laboratory, accommodation for academic facilities, a library and an auditorium cum theatre with a seating capacity for over 800 people. The ground floor of the building is hoped to be leased out to get an additional income. A section of the building will be used for the administration office, the CWC Benefit Scheme office and the recently opened Welfare Shop. Chief Guest IGP Anandarajah addressing those present said: "There are 6,500 police officers in service through out the country. They have no common place to have their social activities. I endorsed the construction of this building with the hope that it will help serve this purpose". The building will, not only help promote the welfare facilities to the members and their families but also be a permanent asset to the police CWC Benefit Scheme, as well as help enhance the income. Director of the Police Welfare Division Asoka Wijetilleka said that the building is hoped to be constructed within a year and added that the construction of the building should be completed by November next year. |
