Interim Administration: Counter proposals finalised LTTE confident of Govt. approval by S. Selvakumar and Ananth Palakidnar The LTTE, which concluded its deliberations on the draft interim administration proposals for the North East on Friday, expressed confidence of the government accepting its counter proposals, but also warned of serious consequences should it be rejected. In two separate interviews from Paris on Friday, LTTE's political wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan, and Eastern Commander Karuna Amman, both stated that government acceptance of the counter proposals would create a conducive atmosphere for the resumption of peace talks. But, while Thamilselvan expressed confidence of the government 'considering the proposal positively', Karuna, taking a tough stance, warned of serious consequences, if the proposals are rejected. "Our proposals are firm, novel and very clear. It fulfils the aspirations of the Tamils. Whether the government accepts it or rejects it, the international community will get to know the true positions," Karuna Amman said in an interview with a private radio station, monitored in England. "Several internationally famous constitutional and legal experts including Professor Sornarajah who taught law to Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe and Professor G. L. Peiris; and former Attorney General Siva Pasupathy were responsible for the drafting of our proposals. And if the government rejects it, it will only reveal the communal feelings of the majority community," he said. Thamilselvan in an exclusive interview with the Eelanatham daily in Killinochchi on Friday said, "We have focused mainly on the issues of land and on implementing law and order in the North and the East. Our legal and constitutional experts have given very valuable consultations on preparing our proposals to the government and we believe nothing will go wrong. He further said that immediate attention has been focused on the rehabilitation and the reconstruction activities in the North and the East and the Paris meeting felt that an authoritative administration was essential to spearhead the rehabilitation and the reconstruction activities. "We believe the United National Front Government will consider our proposals positively and create a conducive atmosphere to resume the stalled peace talks", Thamilselvan said. The LTTE delegation left for Switzerland on Friday to meet with officials of the Asian Desk at the Swiss Foreign Ministry and is expected to return to Wanni on September 3. After discussing the proposals with the LTTE supremo Prabhakaran, another delegation, led by Thamilselvan will leave for another European country to further study the proposals. It will be submitted to the government through the Norwegian facilitators after a second round of discussion with the LTTE leader. |
