Non-academics suspend strike

by ANJANA GAMAGE

The non- academic staff of all universities yesterday agreed temporarily to call off their three week long strike and report to work from tomorrow.

The decision to suspend the strike follows long discussions Minister of Tertiary Education and Training Kabeer Hashim, Minister of Education Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku and the University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. B.R.R.N. Mendis had with 12 members of the Inter University Trade Unions Federation (IUTUF) at the UGC premises yesterday afternoon.

More than 9000 non academic university staff commenced their strike on August 12 demanding that the existing salary anomalies be rectified and various other greevances be looked into.

"We decided to temporarily call off our strike because two ministers along with the UGC officials promised to appoint a special committee with the assistance of the SIDA to look into the salary anomalies and other grievances. media spokesman of the IUTUF, R.M.W Ratnayake told the Sunday Observer.
