Flood of applications for popular schools by ANJANA GAMAGE The Ministry of Education has launched a "Primary Model School Development Project" to tackle the increasing demand for Year One admissions to popular schools. According to Ministry sources, there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of applications for 2004 admissions received by popular schools in Colombo and the outstation. Royal College, Colombo had received 5,000, Visakha Vidyalaya, Bambalapitiya 4,000, Dharmaraja College and Mahamaya Girls' School, both Kandy, more than 4,500 applications each. At present Royal College can accommodate only 400 students and other schools 200 each. Year One school admission competition is not only limited to Colombo district, but also applicable to every district including Galle, Kandy, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Matara, Kalutara and Ratnapura, Minister of Education Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku said. Under the new project, 400 schools in the country will be developed at a cost of Rs. 400 million. Fifty schools have been selected for the first phase of the project, the Minister said, explaining that each school will be granted a sum of Rs. 10 lakhs for this purpose. The project will be extended to other schools as well. The Treasury has already released the necessary funds for 50 schools, the Minister added. |
