USAID assists courts in North and East The US Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a plan to assist courts in the North and East by providing them with 19 desktop computers and printers. Mr. James F. Entwistle, Charge D'Affaires at the United States Embassy, met with Mr. Bradman Weerakoon, Secretary to the Prime Minister, on Wednesday to announce the grant of computer equipment to courts in Akkaraipattu, Ampara, Batticaloa, Chavakachcheri, Jaffna, Kalmunai, Kayts, Mallakam, Mannar, Muttur, Point Pedro, Trincomalee and Vavuniya. The computers will be equipped with word-processing software in Sinhala, Tamil and English, Entwistle said. Other equipment to be provided includes uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems for the computers, as well as facsimile machines, generators and photocopiers. The assistance announced today by the Charge D' Affaires is part of USAID's longstanding support for human rights and rule of law programs in Sri Lanka. Earlier examples include a case tracking system for the Colombo Court of Appeal, mediation boards and training of mediators, a judicial mentoring system, support for the Human Rights Commission's regional field officers, human rights training for government officers and civil society activists, and support for the Legal Aid Commission. The new gift is part of USAID's "Democracy and Governance" initiative, which prevents conflict by building bridges across civil society, promoting multi-partisanship in party politics, enhancing local government service delivery, and expanding levels of legal and political recourse available to vulnerable groups. |
