Two girls sexually abused before entering 'home' - Commissioner by Shanika Sriyananda In a new twist to the alleged incidents of sexual abuse at a state-run children's home, the two female victims are now being accused of having had either consensual sex or sexually abused by someone else prior to being sent to the home. The Probation and Childcare Department, recently began an investigation into allegations that two of the underage inmates of the certified Ranmuthugala Children's Home were sexually and physically abused by the Assistant House mistress and her husband. But the Commissioner of Probation and Childcare Department, Western Province, W. M. Ratnasiri, told the 'Sunday Observer' that the two girls had been abused before they had come to the home. "Our investigations still cannot claim that these girls have been abused at the home", Ratnasiri said, adding that the two girls had run away from home and stayed with their boy friends at the time they were taken into police custody. One girl was referred to the home by the Polonnaruwa courts two years ago and the other was sent to the home four-months ago by the Mawanella courts", he said. He said that no outsider was permitted to come inside the home and that the gates were closed after 6.30 p.m. "The alleged incident, according to the two girls, had happened at 5.00 p.m. on a day when the children were engaged in welfare activities conducted by the Rotary Club", he said. Ratnasiri said that there were no witnesses to confirm the alleged incident, although there were over 100 girls at the home, on that day. However, the two girls aged 14 and 16, ran away from the Ranmuthugala Children's Home and lodged a complaint with the police alleging physical and sexual abuse by the Assistant House mistress and her husband, two weeks ago. |
