Bellanwila Esala festival concludes today

The water-cutting ceremony which brings to a culmination the annual Esala Festival of the historic Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya will be held today, Aug. 31 under the auspices of deputy chief incumbent of the Vihara Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Wimalarathana. This will be followed by Deva Dana and a day perahera.

The festival commenced on August 14 with a week-long pirith-chanting ceremony. The planting of the Kap (Kap Situweema) took place on August 20, in accordance with ancient traditions and rituals. On August 29, the historic Pavada Perahera, where the relic casket and statues was held with pomp and pageantry.

Buddhist temple in Zurich

A Buddhist temple was established at Zurich, Switzerland under the patronage of Ven. Dr. Sumanasara Thera (Malaysia), Ven. Vinayasara Thera (Geneve Buddhist Centre) and Sri Lanka Ambassador in Switzerland, Prabath Kariyawasam recently.

Ven, Karuwalagaswewa Anuruddha Thera and Ven. Walpola Kalyanatissa are resident at the temple at present. The temple is named Zurich Viharaya to commemorate the U.N. Declaration of Vesak Day as an international holiday.

Buddhists, Muslims and Tamils living in Zurich, Burma and Germany have lavishly contributed to this worthy cause.

High-powered meeting

A top-level meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday, Sept 8 to review the overall situation in the Eastern Province.

Several senior ministers, defence and government officials will participate at the meeting.

This is the follow-up which was convened by the Premier on August 27.

Rs. 15m donation for housing project

Mrs. Eileen de Mel, wife of former partner of H. L. de Mel & Co (Pvt) Ltd, the late R. H. de Mel has donated a sum of Rs. 15 million to construct 100 houses for the homeless at Melsiripura, in memory of her husband.

Kurunegala District MP, Anura Gopallawa, is planning to obtain state land for the project, Colombo Pharmacy Co. Ltd. Chairman and H. L. de Mel & Co. (Pvt) Ltd Managing Director, Romesh de Mel said. H. L. de Mel & Co. (Pvt) Ltd. will co-ordinate the entire housing project on behalf of Mrs. Eileen de Mel.

Veteran cartoonist dead

Jiffrey Yoonus, a veteran cartoonist with over three decades died on Thursday at the Sri Jayawardenapura hospital after a brief illness. He started his profession as a cartoonist of the Thinakaran newspaper of the Lake House group and later joined the Aththa newspaper.

He had a flair for portraying political figures in his cartoons which attracted a wider readership. His political caricature "Appuhamy" was a popular cartoon with a fine sense of humour. Yoonus continued his career in Aththa until its closure. He was also a member of the Sri Lanka Press Council. His funeral took place on Friday.

Matara Church Feast begins on Sept. 4 

The Annual Feast of the historic St. Mary's Church, Beach Road, Kotuwegoda, Matara, commences at 4.30 p.m. on September 4 with the hoisting of flags and Holy Mass.
