Computer competency through SLCDL by Elmo Leonard In today's context, being computer competent is part and parcel of civilised man, and computer educationalist, Singapore Informatics (SI), has begun conducting a course of study called Sri Lanka Computer Driving License (SLCDL), which enables a person to use computers. SLDCL certificate holders are accepted by the State and private sectors, as well as internationally. SLCDL was hitherto conducted by National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), the government approved authority for conducting trade tests for providing computer skills required by the government and the private sector. NAITA entered into a partnership with SI, and the first batch of computer competent persons passed out last week. Singapore Informatics Computer Institute (Pvt) Ltd or SI, is part of the global company, Informatics Holdings Ltd, based in Singapore, currently operating in 50 countries. In Sri Lanka, the course of study in question, was launched in 12 SI centres, in Colombo and in the provinces. Within the next three years, SI would train 50,000 school leavers and 25,000 persons employed in government and the private sector, SI's Deputy Chairman, Professor Lakshman Watawala, said at an award presentation to the first batch of trained persons and trainers of SLCDL. This course of study would cost under Rs. 6000 and would be covered within 120 hours. Along with other computer studies, it would be extended to Vavuniya and Jaffna, Prof Watawala said. |
