First ever dry port in Colombo by HIRAN H. SENEWIRATNE K Port Pvt Ltd, has signed an agreement with the Board of Investment (BOI) to establish the country's first ever dry port in Colombo with an investment of Rs 1 billion. The concept, which is prevalent in many developed countries, differs from the conventional sea port operations and it would be a private sector venture, mainly dealing with handling, storing and delivery of cargo, for imports and exports, from a single point. The dry port would be basically a multi-integrated service point, located at Mutuwal (Colombo 15).This new service would be implemented in a nine acre land with a storage capacity of 200,000 square feet for container load units. This port would focus on core activity handling and turning around ships efficiently with minimum water fronted areas, said its Consultant M. S. M. Niyas. With the arrival of goods at the K Port base all necessary documentation and inspection would be completed within five hours. Under the present system, it would take more than a day to clear all documents at the Colombo Port. "With the implementation of the new system, unnecessary delays and congestions would be eliminated thus providing an efficient and quick service," he added. This would also to a great extent eliminate the security problem, he added. The company for the first time had planned to install three rubber tyre gantry cranes outside the Colombo Port, which would help to optimise the service. This concept known as the Custom City in developed countries with the K Port would handle 30 per cent of the total cargo. |
