Hameedia to open in India Hameedia, Sri Lanka's men's wear and retail giant, aims to put the country on the global retail map when they open their first overseas outlet in India at the Spencer Plaza in Chennai. The Sri Lanka Trade Centre located at the Spencer Plaza is the first store to be opened by courtesy of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board under the Free Trade Agreement. This would enable Hameedia Stores to avail themselves of all duty free and other resultant concessions. Hameedia would sell their own brands namely Lebond, Envoy and Signature and it would pave the way for other local entrepreneurs to market their goods overseas, said Managing Director Hameedia Fouzul Hameed. He said that Hameedia prides itself on selling only originals. Initially, Hameedia India would cater to gents and would stock the range that was currently on sale in Sri Lanka. Staffed by Sri Lankans, Hameed was confident that Hameedia would be more than able to hold its own despite the fact that India was renowned for its garment and textile industry. "Our garments are on par with any premium brand that is manufactured in international markets in terms of design, authenticity and value", he said. Hameedia intends opening out across India and has plans to establish stores in Bangalore, Mumbai and at least 2 other cities by the end of 2005. The company is also exploring the possibility of opening out in the SAARC region, namely Maldives, Pakistan and Bangladesh, said Hameed, who had no doubt that his locally manufactured brands would match up to international standards and trends. |
