Freedom

At the time of writing the United People's Freedom Alliance appears to be romping home to victory and set to form the new Government. After burning his fingers in a brief, but costly interlude with the United Front Government led by Ranil Wickremesinghe, the voter has once more reposed trust in the country's charismatic President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, a warm, caring human being, a stateswoman of dynamism and courage.

Cometh the hour, cometh the person. Sri Lanka at this moment in time, needs a strong leader to get us out of the mess the UNF Government has put us in. Some of the more immediate problems the new Government must give priority to, are to kick start the peace process, stalled since last April, introduce tough new measures to combat corruption and the naked abuse of power for which the UNF was notorious. Never in the history of Sri Lanka, have so many earned so much, in so short a time.

Many of these corrupt politicians received their just rewards when they were summarily kicked out of office, by the people. Among them were some well-known names with bloated egos and even more bloated bank accounts, both local and foreign, who lived in luxury far beyond their visible means.

They heavily bribed some of the private media to cover up their sins of commission and engaged in filthy mudslinging such as that which the President has had to endure for quite some time.

Our thoughts go back to the blackest day in the history of Parliament, when some of these MPs then in the opposition, given the boot yesterday by their electorate behaved as would common or garden thugs and hoodlums, shouting the vilest epithets and foulest language. President Kumaratunga made of sterner stuff than these sawdust Caesars, didn't flinch one bit as she bravely continued to deliver her devolution proposals. They have received their just desserts.

The UNF tried by hook or by crook to prevent the Freedom Alliance from being formed and when that failed, tried to destroy it, by spreading vile canards, character assassination and all else that is evil. The people have rejected the UNF Government lock, stock and barrel and ushered in a vibrant new era placing their trust in one who has promised them permanent peace and happiness.
