Tight security will continue - IGP by ANTON NONIS Police will continue to maintain strict security in the country for as long as the situation warrants it, Inspector General of Police, Indra de Silva told the Sunday Observer. Deputy Inspector General, Jayantha Wickremaratne monitoring election violence said that police personnel posted on election duties have been instructed to stay out until further notice. The post-election security he said would be a direct Police-Army combination, unlike security during polls, where the Army was deployed at polling booths, counting centres and road blocks. The Police-Army combination is geared to face any contingency and maintain law and order, DIG Wickremaratne said. The Air Force and the Navy would also stand-by to assist the Police-Army combination whenever necessary, commanders Donald Perera and Daya Sandagiri of the Air Force and the Navy, respectively, said. On the instructions of President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the Defence Ministry had stepped up security in the Eastern region following tension in the area. Eastern range DIG Neville Wijesinghe said that special police teams had been deployed to investigate the killing of Sathyamoorthy and his brother-in-law in Batticaloa last week. The third person who sustained injuries in the shooting had been transferred to the Apollo Hospital in Colombo. His statement could not be recorded as he was not in a fit condition to make one. DIG Wijesinghe said that the two gunmen had used 9 mm pistols for the killing. The spent ammunition that was recovered from the site will be sent to the Government Analyst, he said. |
