Prime Minister to meet Sonia Gandhi today

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who is currently visiting India on his first official visit in his capacity as the Premier is scheduled to meet several key figures in India's newly established Government today and tomorrow.

Premier Rajapakse who is the first foreign dignitary to have been invited by the new Indian administration will first call on Chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi this morning.

Political analyst claimed that Premier Rajapakse's visit would further strengthen the longstanding relations between the two countries.

During his two day visit, the Prime Minister will meet the Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh tomorrow (19).

Today Sunday 18, Premier Rajapakse is scheduled to meet Indian Finance Minister Shri P. Chidambaram and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Shri Sharad Pawar. He will also have discussion, with Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation Shri Oscar Fernandes while he will meet Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping T.R. Balu in the evening.

This high level Sri Lankan delegation led by Premier Rajapakse comprises Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle and Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

"Premier Rajapakse had been invited by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," an official at the Premier's office said.

The delegation is scheduled to take up important bilateral issues with their counterparts with the aim of strengthening the longstanding relations between the two countries.

The Sri Lankan delegation also includes Secretary to the Prime Minister Lalith Weeratunga and advisor to the Premier Sunimal Fernando.
