Police recover stolen gold jewellery by Jayampathy Jayasinghe A haul of stolen gold jewellery items including chains, bangles, pendants, wristwatches and cameras have been recovered following the arrest of two drug addicts from Hokandara area by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) sleuths last Friday. CCD Director SSP Sarath Lugoda said that the jewellery and other items valued around Rs. 800,000 have been stolen from residences in Hokandara and in adjacent areas while the inmates have been away from their homes. The modus operandi of the drug addicts had been to steal small items like gold jewellery and wristwatches which could be easily disposed of for a lesser price. Several of these items have been recovered from pawn brokering shops and from people in Hokandara area who had purchased them. Pawn receipts of some stolen jewellery items have been sold to persons who redeem them and sell them at a higher price. Many persons who had purchased stolen items could'nt be easily traced, SSP Lugoda said. Meanwhile, several persons in the Hokandara area wanted for house breaking and theft are absconding, police said. The two suspects will be produced in Court after completion of investigations. |
