Now ... dog is man's best friend

by Prasad Gunewardene

The belief is that man is dog's best friend. But, in this changing world man is more cruel than the animal. In an era where man fails to standby a man, the dog becomes the best friend of the man. However, cruel men fail to understand this in the correct perspective. Such men keep on attacking any dog which comes their way in the same manner they attack their own kind. Those who know the value of this four legged animal displays kindness. Because, a dog well loved and looked after will never betray the master.

Stray dogs look for love and protection. In this country only a few people have a heart for them. The cruel thinks to eradicate them at the first glance. A dog well looked after is more understanding than a human being. However much the animal may be fierce it has noble qualities. A dog displays fierce qualities only to protect the master. But a man displays such qualities to destroy many of his own kind. Sometimes, the man has no reason for barking at many as the kindergarten story says about a dialogue between two dogs which saw a man shouting at everybody all the time. One dog had asked the other why the man was screaming at everyone around him. The other had replied, "We have a reason to bark and they don't have".

The Animal Welfare and Protection Association committed to care for dogs in the stray found several them and provided them a new home at Kahatuduwa. Nearly ten of them are seen in the picture on this page living happily and peacefully unlike mankind. "They escaped the gas chamber thanks to this Association and the efforts of its President, Mrs. Hemantha Jayatilleke. These animals are provided with food with a caretaker in charge. The treatment looks better than facilities afforded in some paid Homes for Elders where man is only concerned about money and not of his own kind.

Animal lovers are around the globe. But, opportunities and facilities are less to provide comfort to these stray animals. Local bodies are only interested to destroy them. Be the animal mad or not, eradication is given priority.

The "Sunday Observer" last week received a communication from Aktive Tierschutzgruppe Salez (ATS) from Switzerland which said they were looking for animal lovers. This organisation for animals has transformed a hellhole for dogs to a haven where the animal is sterilized, vaccinated, wormed and marked. They are looking for homes for 80 dogs (60 puppies).

Most of these puppies have been sterilized and vaccinated. Those under three months (Too young to be sterilized) will be vaccined, sterilized, wormed with a red collar in time free of charge, the organisation stated. Kind hearted people are free to contact the ATS -Controller in Sri Lanka, Rohini De Silva on telephone Nos. 0602 801736 or 0777 840294. The stories of unfortunate dogs looks more interesting than some human episodes with much glamour and splendour.
