Death by 'lethal injection'

From Upali Rupasinghe in New Delhi

The Law Commission of India has recommended that 'Lethal injection' should be provided as an alternative mode of death sentence along with the existing ones, that of 'hanging by neck.'

Elaborating on details of the other modes of executing death sentence, the vice-chairman of the commission, Dr. N.M. Ghatate told newspapers that 'The lethal injection is being accepted now to be most civilised mode of execution of death sentence as it is the painless and a swift method of execution.'

The commission is of the view that discretion should be given to the court which can decide the mode of execution of death sentence after taking various relevant factors into consideration.

The recommendations were tabled in the Rajya Sabha last Monday.
