Owen de Abrew :

Golden felicitation bash

Owen de Abrew - the evergreen ballroom dance personality in Sri Lanka celebrates fifty years in dancing this year. To felicitate his contribution to the local dance world, the newly formed Ballroom Dancers Federation International Sri Lanka have organised a Golden Bash at the Galle Face Hotel today. The highlight of this dance will be the attendance of a Dance Orchestra - "Friends in Harmony" in addition to DJ music.

Owen who started his dance career under the tutelage of Carl Cooke, the first Sri Lankan who obtained British qualification from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, won his first championship in 1952 at the National ballroom Open Event. Owen took to teaching from 1954 and even at the ripe old age of 84, he continues his services as an effective instructor.

In 1988 his students Dushmantha Karanagoda and Manoji Samararatne were selected to represent Sri Lanka at the World Championships held in USA. In 1989 the National Association of Dancing, UK awarded him a medal for outstanding contribution to Ballroom Dancing in Sri Lanka and Owen was privileged to receive this award from John Dilroy - Ten Dance Champion, Fellow and Examiner of the Imperial Society.

Another of Owen's proud achievement is that a second generation of Ballroom Dancers has emerged in the form of his son Ravi, who is a dancer cum instructor. Owen's past and present students, fellow teachers and well wishers will gather at this special event to felicitate him.
