Uniflow traffic from Kollupitiya to Wellawatte

by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

A new traffic scheme will come into operation probably next week within the Colombo city limits to reduce traffic congestion that has caused irritation to motorists over the years due to frequent traffic jams occurring on Galle road and the Duplication road.

The traffic delays have caused tremendous losses to business establishments owing to the time factor and motorists who burn a lot of gasoline when caught up in a traffic pile up.

Senior Supdt. of Police, Y. G. R. M. Lafir, of the City Traffic Division said the new uniflow system allows the flow of traffic northwards from the Savoy Cinema up to Kollupitiya junction on both dual carriageways. The traffic will proceed along Galle Face up to Pettah or Kotahena, Traffic moving southwards will proceed along R. A. de Mel Mawatha up to Dharmarama Road, Colombo 6 and enter Galle Road.

The uniflow system will help prevent criminals from escaping especially after a shoot as they will not be able to veer off into another road. Three wheeler cab drivers too will feel the pinch as they will not be able to do their usual "U" turns and buses will be permitted to travel only on the Left lane.

Meanwhile traffic from Ananada Coomarasamy Mawatha heading towards Liberty Junction will turn left into Duplication road and enter Galle Road through St. Anthony's road.

Asked whether there are sufficient bus halts, on Duplication road, SSP Lafir said new bus halts will have to be erected when the scheme becomes operative.

It had been observed that around 100,000 to 120,000 vehicles enter the city. The new uniflow system has been designed with assistance from the Moratuwa University, he said.
