Met. Department promises rain by Anura Maitipe The prolonged drought that existed in Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya, Hambantota, Moneragala, Kurunegala and Badulla areas has ended with fall of convectional rains during past few days, Meteorology Department spokesman told the Sunday Observer. Heavy showers in Ratnapura, Kalutara, Matara and Galle districts has caused flood and earth slips in some part of these districts and one death has been reported following an earth slip in Eheliyagoda. The surrounding areas of Weganga, Ginganga, Kaluganga and Nilwalaganga have been submerged due to flood, he added. Meanwhile, the drought situation in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Puttalam district is still continuing. A spokesman for Meteorology Department said according to satellite pictures the sky of all over the country is filled with clouds and convectional rains will develop in these areas too within next few days. However, North-East monsoon has not still begun and it will be activated in mid-November. Once it is activated there will be heavy rains in all parts of the country, he added. Meanwhile, Agricultural Ministry has urged the farmers to prepare fields as early as possible, in order sow paddy with the commencement of North-East monsoon to save the crop from drought. |
