GHF Mercy Mission returns

by Rohan Mathes

The 22nd 'Mercy Mission in free Plastic Surgery' and the 5th of InterPlast UK, is to be conducted at the Hambantota Base Hospital from October 18 to 30. Its President Dr. Charles Viva will head the team which includes 15 medical personnel from UK, USA, France and Sri Lanka.

This was announced at a press briefing at the 'Gramodaya Centre' Wednesday by Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister Sunimal Fernando.

Sunimal Fernando told newsmen that the 'Mercy Mission' is sponsored and organised by the German Help Foundation (GHF) Sri Lanka which comes under the auspices and patronage of the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and his ministry officials. Hambantota Base Hospital Medical Superintendant Dr. U.P. Ariyawansa and his medical staff would coordinate the mission.

Free Plastic Surgery Mercy Missions have been conducted in Government Hospitals at Matara, Trincomalee, Nuwara Eliya, Hambantota, Badulla, Peradeniya, Vavuniya, Marawila, Seeduwa, Ratnapura and Jaffna.

Over 2313 operations have been performed on cleft hips and palates, double cleft, skin grafts, burns, scar contractures, post traumatic injuries and birth deformities, at a total cost of around Rs.244.2 million.

They have donated surplus equipment, medicine, dressing materials among others to the venues, valued around Rs.18.3 million. Since 2002, free cataract surgery and implants have also been sponsored and organised in addition to free plastic surgery.

The German Federal Government has via the GHF made a donation of hospital equipment valued at around Rs.275 million to the Kandy and Kurunagela Government Hospitals. During the Missions, team members have lectured to medical and para medical personnel of the respective hospitals, on various medical topics. "The GHF had selected Hambantota because a Mercy Mission had not been conducted in that area since 1996 and they also wanted to pay tribute and honour our Prime Minister.
