Police open fire, two dead by Jayampathy Jayasinghe and Kapila Somaratne Two men who flung hand grenades at the Pinwatte Police Post in order to retrieve the motorcycle seized by the police were shot dead by the Policeman on reserve duty yesterday morning. Police have identified both as residents from Wadduwa and Pinwatte, wanted in connection with several snatch chain robberies in the area. The gang had been responsible for snatching chains of women employees. The incident happened when a group of policemen on a patrol spotted the two riding a motorcycle in Dibbedda in Pinwatte area. On seeing the police, both abandoned the motorcycle and ran away. Police had later brought the motorcycle to the Pinwatte Police Post for further investigations. Several hours later four persons had gone to the Pinwatte Police Post and demanded the motorcycle. Refusal to hand over the motorcycle resulted in two hand grenades being lobbed at the police Post. Of the two grenade, one had exploded. Fearing more grenades being aimed at him, the Policeman had opened fire with a T-56 rifle killing both. The other two suspects had fled the scene, police said. Panadura Senior Superintendent of Police, K. Dayananda visited the Pinwatte police station to investigate the shooting incident. The Acting Magistrate Panaduara was expected at Police Post yesterday at the time of filing this story. |
