Mayor returns to tackle demolition by Anton Nonis The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) hierarchy has ruled out that acting Mayor, Azath Salley's action to demolish unauthorised structures and constructions within city limits while the mayor was abroad, was `high handed', Municipal Commissioner, Dr. Jayantha Liyanage said. He said that the incident had compelled Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe to summon Mayor Prasanna Gunawardene back to the country, cutting short his foreign trip. He had returned last Friday night though the scheduled date was next Tuesday (28). Dr. Liyanage said, Mayor Gunawardene held discussions with the council members yesterday morning and was happy that the demolitions were halted within a short time. He said that the CMC ordinance requires 14 days notice to be given in writing, before any action to demolish takes place. Alternative accommodation too had to be provided. However, no compensation, whatsoever, would be paid to those structures that were eliminated, as they were unauthorised. Those who lost their structures during last week's demolition, have the choice of presenting themselves at the CMC for fresh accommodation elsewhere. Such cases will be taken up in stages from the different wards, according to Dr. Liyanage. "The CMC has not stopped its demolition program, but will be carried out in the proper way," he said. |
