NSF merit awards for scientific research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awards prizes annually to Sri Lanka are scientists for research work of outstanding merit conducted with NSF supported grants. This scheme was initiated in 1986. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 100,000 and a certificate. The aim of this scheme is to bestow on researchers the recognition they deserve for the contribution made for the advancement of science and thereby helping to achieve one of the main objectives of the National Science Foundation.

This awards scheme is also meant to motivate NSF research grantees to conscientiously maintain high standards of scientific research while at the same time helping themselves to enhance their career prospects as recognised scientists.

The NSF merit award has been won by Prof. Veranja Karunaratne, Department of Chemistry, Prof. N.K.R. Adikaram, Department of Botany, and Dr. Karunananda Bobuwela, Department of Chemistry University of Peradeniya, for their work on the project 'Bio active natural products from Sri Lankan lichens culturing of micobiont in the laboratory' (Chemistry).

The following scientists received certificates of commendation.

Dr. Maya B. Gunasekera. Dr. Neil D. Fernandopulle, Senior scientists Genetech, Colombo 8 and Dr. Nalin C.W. Goonasekera, Department of Chemistry, University of Colombo. "Development of DNA markers of the Sri Lankan population for human identification" (Medicine).

Dr. S.B.A. Athauda, and Mr. H. G. U. P. Jayaratne, Department of Biooochemistry, Facultyof Medicine, University of Peradeniya.

"Isolation purification and characterisation of clinically important proteinases of filarial parasites" (Medicine). . Dr. D. U. J. Sonnadara, Prof. T. R. Ariyaratne, and Mr. A. B. Weerasekera, Department of Physics, University of Colombo.

"Implementation of an automated lightning detection network for Sri Lanka" (Physics) Dr. Maya B. Gunasekera, Senior Scientist "Genetech" Colombo 8, Prof. W.D. Ratnasooriya, Department of Zoology, University of Colombo, and Dr. Yasantha Mapatuna, "Samurdhi Authority" Sethsiripaya Battaramulla.

"Molecular systematic of Cynopterus species complex" (Biotechnology).
