Massive peace meditation

by Ananda Kannangara

At least 200,000 men, women and children from all walks of life on Tuesday gathered at the BMICH grounds to show their solidarity towards a massive peace meditation campaign, organised by the Sarvodaya Ahimsa Movement to mark the "International Day of Peace". Sarvodaya leader Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne presided.

The objective of holding this campaign was to urge all peace loving people in the country to work hard to establish a peaceful atmosphere which is immensely needed for people to live without fear and also to continue with the future development activities.

A large number of leading personalities, including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Buddhasasana, Public Security, Law and Order Minister and Acting Defence Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayake attended. Minister Wickramanayake read out a message, sent by President, Chandrika Kumaratunga while MP Karu Jayasuriya spoke on behalf of the Opposition Leader. A representative from the United Nations Organisation also spoke.
