Policeman arrested for bribery A police constable attached to Anamaduwa Police station was arrested by the officers of the Bribery and Corruption Unit, when this constable was taking a sum of Rs. 1,500 from a traffic offender, at Anamaduwa. The person who had been driving a vehicle without a valid driving licence had been apprehended by this constable who had retained his national identity card. The police constable was receiving this bribe for releasing his identity card when he was arrested by the Bribery or Corruption Unit. Puttalam Magistrate Amal Thillakarathne remanded the suspect till September 30. Talking point A Major General so upset over a recent Cabinet decision to provide Armed Forces advertisements only to the state media has written to a high official in the Defence Ministry requesting him to provide advertisements to the private media too. Appeals Help save this infant baby Seventeen-month-old Lakshan Sriskandarajan, of Yarravale estate, Diyagama is ailing from Vetricular Septal Defect (a heart aliment) and he has to urgently undergo a heart operation at Nawaloka Hospital. Dr. Y.K.M. Lahie Consultant Cardiac Surgeon of Nawaloka Hospital, has indicated an amount of Rs. 275,000 for the operation. A sum of Rs. 140,000 will be provided from the President's Fund and the parents of the child are unable to afford the balance amount for which they have approached the Lions Club of Nuwara Eliya for assistance. The Lions Club of Nuwara Eliya has appealed to the generous public to contribute to this worthy cause.
