President proposes : Action Plan for South Asian unity President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a speech delivered at the Hindustan Times Leadership Initiative in New Delhi last Friday proposed a six point Action Plan for building South Asian unity. The Plan includes inter alia making SAFTA operational by 2006, formulating regional plans within the Millennium Development Goals Program to achieve set targets, formulating plans to achieve SAARC targets for poverty alleviation, health, education, women, youth and children, innovative programs to develop people to people contact in the region and strengthening regional cooperation. "Today we have arrived at the threshold of effective action to realize the dreams and aspirations of our people: freedom from poverty, from ignorance, under-development and from constant conflict which could be achieved through regional unity of South Asian states" she said. She also called for strengthening the institutions of SAARC. |
