JKH engages Gateway to improve English

John Keells Holdings(JKH), has made significant investments to provide opportunities for less fortunate children in the country to learn English. One hundred and fifty children were awarded full scholarships to follow a two-year English language program at the Gateway Language Centres in Colombo, Wattala, Gampaha, Kandy and Galle. Secondary school students are provided with training, course material (both classroom as well as self study with cassettes), and the opportunity to sit for international examinations.

The scholars could obtain British qualifications completely free of charge. JKH wishes to broad-base this offer by spreading into other areas of the country in the near future.

Gateway's language program is designed to be accessible to everyone learning English - from teenagers to school leavers. The courses are graded at 5 levels (Foundation, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Diploma) according to one's knowledge and competence.

The Diploma level is accepted for UK University entrance. Candidates can enter at a stage that suits them and progress through the series as they improve their language skills. The curriculum is designed by London Examinations (Edexcel) according to the Council of Europe Common European Framework.

Students have the opportunity to sit for tests carried out by London Examinations (Edexcel) at the end of each of the 5 levels. These tests are referred to as the London Tests of English. Edexcel is responsible for the setting of test papers and the marking of answer scripts. Successful students receive Certificates of Attainment from Edexcel at the end of each level. These qualifications are internationally recognized.

Gateway also offers English language programs to younger children. Gateway's "English for Young Learners" course is designed to cater to the needs of children between 6 to 12 years of age. It is conducted at 3 Levels - Starters, Movers and Flyers.

Students are prepared for the Cambridge Young Learners English Tests conducted by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The oral tests of this examination are conducted by examiners of the British Council and the answer scripts are sent overseas for marking.

For Adults and Professionals, Gateway offers language programs in Business English, according to curricular designed by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Here too, if they so wish, students may opt to sit for Cambridge examinations at the end of each of the 3 levels. All course materials for the programme - course books, audiocassettes, etc. are provided from the UK.
