Death penalty made effective President Chandrika Kumaratunga held an emergency meeting yesterday morning with Minister for Public Security, Law and Order and high-level officials. Several important decisions were arrived at with regard to the prevention of organized crime in the country. The death penalty was made effective from yesterday for rape and murder and narcotic dealings. The Crime Prevention Unit of the Police will be re-organised and strengthened with immediate effect. President Kumaratunga has given instructions to relevant authorities to bring in proposed amendments to the criminal law, in addition to adopting regulations, systems and procedures to minimize laws delays. A press release issued by the Presidential Secretariat yesterday said that it was decided to set up a special Police unit for the security of Judges and the law courts. Details of plans were also discussed and instructions given, to have the security plan effective by Friday, November 26. "It was also decided that all these actions should take effect within four weeks," the release added. The Minister for Public Security, Law and Order, his Secretary and the IGP will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the above. The President will discuss with the Chief Justice all these matters and seek his advice with regard to the plan of action that will be adopted by the government. A special compensation will be paid to the family of the deceased Judge from the Presidents Fund. The release also said that President and the Government have expressed shock and concern at the assasination of Justice Ambepitiya and extended their deepest sorrow to the bereaved family of Justice Ambepitiya. |
