Justice Ambepitiya murder : BASL expresses grief, shock The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) in a press release states that they are grieved and shocked by the brutal and inhuman murder of the Justice Ambepetiya, one of the most respected judges of the High Court. The late Judge Sarath Ambepetiya was highly respected for his judicial independence and fearlessness when discharging his duties and judicial functions up to the time of his death. His death is a great and irreparable loss to both the bench and the bar of the country. The Bar Association notes that this is the first time in the history of Sri Lanka that a sitting judicial officer has been brutally murdered. If such attacks are not arrested, the very foundation of Law and Order of this country will be in grave jeopardy. We therefore call upon President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as Head of State to forthwith restore and implement capital punishment and direct all meaningful steps be taken immediately to arrest this situation and restore Law and Order in this country. We call upon the President to immediately grant adequate protection and security for all judges. We express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the members of the family of Justice Ambepetiya and to the family members of the late Inspector of Police Ranasinghe Arachchige Upali, who was brutally murdered at the same time. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has unanimously decided to request all members of the Bar throughout the country to abstain from performing their professional functions on November 22. and not to charge any fees from any client on that day as a mark of respect to the late Judge Ambepitiya and to congregate at the BASL Headquarters at 11.a.m. on November 22 to attend the funeral. |
