Mahanayake Thera happy with tax on racing, gaming

by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of Malwatte Chapter highly appreciated the increase of taxes on horse racing and gaming and the prices of liquor by the first budget of the Alliance Government presented by Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama in Parliament.

Mahanayake Thera said so when North-Central Province Governor Dr. Jagath Balasuriya paid a courtesy call on him on Friday 19.

He also said that if the two major political parties decide to work together with the view to solve the ethnic conflict and to bring about lasting peace, there was no need for any conditions to do so.

Most Ven. Thera added that some of those in Opposition had stated that if the Opposition (UNP) was going to work together with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, such a merger should be on certain conditions. But he was of the view that there was no need for any conditions for two major political powers to join hands to work for the benefit of the nation.

It was very important that the opposition should extend their support and co-operation to President Kumaratunga in her sincere efforts to solve the national problem faced by the country. Both parties should discuss and come into a consensus since this should be treated beyond political party differences.

It appeared that the Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe was willing to work together with the President on this issue.

"If the leaders of the main political powers in the country, namely President Kumaratunga and the Opposition Leader Wickremesinghe come to an agreement to work together to solve the ethnic problem it would be an exemplary decision to the whole world", added Most Ven. Thera who added that the President's efforts to solve this problem has his full blessings.

He also requested that steps should be taken to ban tuition classes on Sundays and also to ensure proper status to Dhamma School certificates.
