Errant police officers will not be tolerated - IGP by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy IGP Chandra Fernando was not prepared to colourwash the wrong-doing police personnel, if any, in the Police service, such as those who harassed the innocent people. He said so in reply to certain questions posed to him by media personnel when he participated at a ceremony held at Dalada Maligawa, Kandy on Friday and briefed them at the office of Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne. IGP Chandra Fernando said that he would not tolerate any police officer harassing members of public by excessive use of power vested in them. If any police officer was found to have behaved in that manner, suitable steps would be taken against them. He said that police officers, who were alleged to have been involved in the recent incidents in Anuradhapura and Udawalawe had been remanded. He said that public support was imperative in combatting crime in the country. There had been a spate of grave crimes such as murders, robberies and kidnapping etc in areas like Udawalawe and Embilipitiya and those criminals were still at large but steps had been taken to strengthen night patrols in those areas. A vehicle had been driven away disregarding a police warning, which had resulted in one of those unfortunate incidents. Recently, he visited the North with Navy Chief Daya Sandagiri and high security boundaries and initiated mekasures to ensure the maintainance of law and order in those areas. He also exhorted the people of the necessity to co-operate with the police. |
