More security for Judges by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The Government will introduce a new security strategy and insurance scheme with immediate effect for judges, Justice and Judicial Reforms Minister John Seneviratne told the Sunday Observer yesterday. "I foresaw this danger on the lives of Judges three months ago. I got down former IGP Indra de Silva and other relevant officials to discuss a new security strategy", the Minister said. When asked what happened to that strategy, he said that unfortunately it did not fall into place. He said that security would be provided immediately to judges with immediate effect after identifying judges whose lives were in danger. When asked how many security officers will be given to each judge the Minister said that initially four officers would be given but could be increased on requirement. The Minister went on to say that he will propose a new insurance scheme for judges at the next Cabinet meeting as an urgent requirement. |
