Trauma control program essential - Dr. Goonetilleke by Ananda Kannangara The number of trauma victims in our country is increasing day by day and it is high time for the authorities to focus special attention towards the establishment of a trauma control program, Consultant Surgeon, Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital Dr. Gamini Goonetilleke said. He was speaking at a ceremony held at the Sri Lanka Medical Association Auditorium on Friday to coincide with the presentation of awards for three Lankan journalists for outstanding contribution in print media on health issues in all three languages during the past one year. Dr. Goonetilleke asked why the relevant authorities did not take any interest to launch a trauma control program as already started for other diseases such as malaria, leprosy, rabies, TB, filariasis and also sexual transmitting diseases. He said that adequate punishments must be given to persons involved in harmful activities, so the number of trauma victims could be reduced, and a large number of unfortunate deaths prevented," he added. Journalists Dasun Edirisinghe from "Vidusara", Marlin Marikar from "Thinakaran" and Sajeewan Wijewardana from "Daily Mirror" won certificates and awards at the ceremony. |
