Appeal to international community

by Rohan Mathes

International relief aid in cash and kind is boosted daily for the tsunami tidal wave victims in the 12 districts of Sri Lanka that have been devastated by the massive tidal surges which swept the Indian Ocean region and displaced at least a million from their homes, to take refuge in public buildings, schools and makeshift camps.

The Pakistan High Commission has established a Relief Fund to help the victims of tsunami tidal waves. The Pakistan High Commissioner Bashir Wali Mohmand has appealed to the Pakistani community to make generous donations to the fund Account No.9755-2, Habib Bank Ltd., at 140-142, Second Cross Street, Pettah, Colombo 11.

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has sent its first truckload of relief food which includes 168 tonnes of commodities as part of a WFP stockpile of more than 4000 tonnes of rice, wheat flour, lentils and sugar, sufficient to provide an emergency ration to 500000 people for two weeks.

UNICEF Belgium donated a consignment of tents which would be distributed by UNICEF Sri Lanka, based on the supply list forwarded by the government of Sri Lanka. A consignment of medical supplies from UNICEF Copenhagen was also donated. Plan Sri Lanka donated Rs. 20 million to the National Disaster Fund to augment government efforts in providing immediate relief and rehabilitation.
