Former Olympic runner Dharmasena coaches rural athletes

Former athlete S. V. A. Dharmasena who represented Sri Lanka in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980 has turned out to be a up-and-coming coach in the sport that he loved so much. When Dharmasena was actively participating in competitions. His team mates were: Kosala Sahabandu, A. Premachandra, K. P. M. Perera and Ranjith Aluvihara at the Olympic Games in 1980.

He also represented at the Asian Games held in Bangkok in 1979.

He came into big-time athletics after joining the Sri Lanka Army and was attached to the Light Infantry from 1972 to 1982 and at the Defence Services meet held in 1980. Dharmasena won the Best Performance award clocking a time of 49.1 seconds in the 400 metres event.

He is now attached to the Kandy Municipal Council as a playground instructor and has been there since 1988.

Dharmasena is in charge of the organisational aspects of athletics at the Kandy Municipal Council and he is spreading the good knowledge that he gained as a participant to the children of the area. He is training young athletes at Deiyannewela Playground.

Among the athletes he has brought upto competition level_Namal Bandara of Kingswood College and S. Ratnadeepa of Dharmaraja College both of whom have fared well in the 400 metres and become champions.

Another young athlete who is fast becoming a champion is Kasee Dayawansa of Girls High School, Kandy who won the 100 and 200 metre-events at the National School Games held last year in the under 17 age group.
