'Bounce Back
Sri Lanka' coming soon
by Chanuka Mannapperuma The cost for the resettlement of people in the coastal belt is estimated US$ 120 million and the restoration of the tourists resorts at US$ 195 million, said Industries, Tourism and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Bandaranaike addressing the press last week. Minister said that duty waivers will also be offered to the tourism industry."Import duty for all items needed for renovation of resorts and hotels as well as for the replacement of vehicles required for tourism transport will be exempted. Building hotels within a 100-metre zone would not have a negative impact on the tourism industry. "I am hoping to submit a cabinet proposal to this effect next week", Minister added. The resettlement of people displaced by the tsunami and the rebuilding of Sri Lanka's beach resorts will be given top priority in the US$ 320 million "Bounce Back Sri Lanka" campaign. Chairman Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) Udaya Nanayakkara explained that fifteen zones along the southern and eastern coastal belt will now have the benefit of the proper master plan incorporating zonal and building regulations. The zones identified are Wadduwa, Beruwela, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Matara, Nilaveli, Hambantota, Tangalle, Yala, Arugam Bay, Pasikuddah and Kalpitiya. 'Bounce Back Sri Lanka' campaign combines international marketing and promotion of the unique tourism attracted unaffected by the tsunami with a rehabilitation and reconstruction program designed to fast-track the development of world class tourism facilities in popular beach side areas, he added.
