New Afro-Asian strategic partnership From Rodney Martinez in Jakarta Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse was, among at least 29 participating Heads of States who signed a draft declaration for a new strategic partnership between Asian and African nations at the Jakarta Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement. There will be an official endorsement of the document today (Sunday) during a gathering in Bandung to commemorate the 1955 Asia-African Conference. All the leaders were expected to sign the declaration and joint statement on Tsunamis earthquakes and other natural disasters at the conclusion of the Summit on Saturday, April 30. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who declared open the Summit on Friday emphasised the need for Asian and African nations to work with the outside world in order to achieve their common goals. He along with South African President Thabo Mbeki are co-chairmen of the Asian-African Summit. For Premier Rajapakse it will be a rare privilege to be among the leaders of only five nations, the others being Burma, Indonesia, India and Pakistan to make the special visit to Bandung, as the co-founders of NAM. Nearly sixty Asian-African leaders are billed to make the special 'pilgrimage' to Bandung today to relive the spirit and reminisce the birth of the enduring partnership between the two continents. |
