No trace of missing IP by Jayampathy Jayasinghe The whereabouts of Inspector P. M. Jayaratnam who is reported missing from his quarters at Mount Lavinia since last Wednesday is still not known. A special police team has been detailed to trace Inspector Jayaratnam on the instructions of IGP Chandra Fernando, as nobody seems to have any clue. IGP Fernando when contacted by the Sunday Observer admitted they are still looking for him. On Wednesday Inspector Jayaratnam had attended a function at Mount Lavinia Hotel, with his wife, few family members along with two of his friends who had come from abroad. After the function his wife had returned home but Inspector Jayaratnam had gone to Colombo with his friends. A complaint was lodged by his wife at the Mount Lavinia police station saying her husband had not returned home. Sources said that Inspector Jayaratnam and Inspector Nilabdeen who manned the Counter Subversive Unit at Mount Lavinia a few years ago had received several death threats believed to be from the LTTE as they have investigated several of their covert operations in Colombo and the suburbs. He was transferred to Wanathavilluwa police station about two years ago and was later transferred to the Police Field Headquarters. Some time ago his wife's parents were slashed with knives by an unknown gang, police said. |
