World Bank lauds FM by Rohan Mathes World Bank President James Wolfensohn lauds Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama on the mechanisms adopted by the Sri Lankan Government in the tsunami relief and reconstruction efforts, Finance Ministry media sources said. The sources told the Sunday Observer yesterday that Wolfensohn had been greatly impressed and fascinated by the methods adopted in the disbursement of the relief payments of Rs.2500, Rs.5000 and the payments made for the re-construction of houses to the tsunami victims islandwide, via the normal state banking system, sans any discrimination, red tape and the usual bureaucratic bungling associated with such transactions. Conveying his appreciation to Dr. Amunugama for his unstinted efforts in the process, the World Bank Chief has recommended the same mechanism, believed to be the first and most successful exercise ever, as a role model for adoption by the World Bank in similar situations in the future. |
