Salary increase for private sector employees by Ananda Kannangara Labour Minister Athauda Seneviratna on Thursday April 21 assured that the six million labour force in the private sector will receive a minimum salary increase of Rs. 1000 commencing next month. He said a special announcement in this regard will be made by the Government on International workers' day, that falls on May 01. "Cabinet approval has already been obtained for the bill and it has been directed to the Legal Draughtsman Department," Minister Seneviratna told the Sunday Observer. He said that the bill would be presented in Parliament during the first week of May. "Thereafter the employer is legally bound to make this payment for their workers along with the salaries in May," he said. The Minister is of the view that some private sector institutions which are financially better off are willing to increase salaries even beyond this amount. According to the new Bill, the wages of daily paid workers who are mainly engaged in carpentry, masonry and similar job categories too will be increased by Rs. 40 per day. |
