CMC after incinerators by Ananda Kannangara Colombo Municipal Commissioner Dr. Jayantha Liyanage on Friday highlighted the urgent need of an incinerator, which cost nearly Rs. six million at their Madampitiya dumping grounds to eliminate the problem of dumping daily collected garbage. "Considering the large stock of garbage, collected from elsewhere in the Colombo city limits and accumulating like mountains, the Government even at this juncture should consider the need of an incinerator," he said. He said that incinerators are used in developed countries to burn garbage and thereafter to produce energy. The Commissioner reiterated that installing an incinerator is the sole solution not only to eliminate the environmental pollution in the area but also to curb regular protest campaigns made by residents. Referring to the recent comments made by residents at Madampitiya to the Sunday Observer in regard to the unbearable stench emanating from the rotten garbage, the Commissioner regretted the inconvenience caused to them, especially to the squatters living in the vicinity of the dumping grounds and said that there was no alternative other than dumping the largely collected daily stock of garbage at their own grounds at Madampitiya. It was also reported that dumping garbage at this site was stopped by the CMC two years ago following protest campaigns made by residents and during this period the CMC used a private ground at Bloemendhal area. Meanwhile it was also reported that a private company, experienced in waste management had offered the CMC to clean the garbage at their cost for the benefit of residents in the area. |
